matthewmacklin asked: So you obvisouly know a lot about politicis.. I'm trying to understand these primary election things in the US.. So the Rep's and the Dem's all have primary elections to see who will be the parties candidate for president? Is that right??
Yes, each major Party in the United States goes through a series of Primaries and Caucuses to determine who their nominee for President is going to be. The winner of each Caucus or Primary receives in each State receives a predetermined number of delegates (either based upon the % of the vote received, or on a ‘winner takes all’ basis) who are then sent to the Convention, where the nomination of the candidate with a majority of delegates is formally accepted. It is a unique system that has has many flaws as it does benefits; I for one see a lot of value in giving the base a voice, but many believe that it is harmful for Party nominees to attack each other as it allegedly gives the other side ammunition in the General. I think there are greater considerations for the American people than “candidate x said this about candidate y so I’m going to vote for the other Party with little deference to the actual issues.” But I digress.
That’s the fairly basic version. I’m sure there are websites around that contain much more detailed and better-articulated versions of what I just said, if you want to know more.
